Month in Review - June 26, 2014

*  Miss C has been practising her drawing and painting recently and has now begun to draw stick people.  This is her latest painting of herself and a butterfly.

*  We took the girls to Spruce Meadows for the National Tournament.  It was lots of fun.  There was plenty of entertainment for the children.  Face painting, wagon rides, a marketplace featuring artisans and crafters, the Prairie Dogs (a dog show with obstacle courses and timed races), a large playground, first responders (with police cars and fire trucks that the children could sit in), pony rides and stables where you could see the horses up close.  We all had a great day out.

*  We attended Miss S's school dance.  Miss C had a great time dancing with all the big girls.

*  We went to the theatre on Father's Day to enjoy the performance of Mary Poppins.  This version of the production mixes the Disney movie storyline with characters from the book series and new songs.  It was wonderful.

*  Sean and I had a date night.  We went to see the always fabulous Michael Buble in concert.  He sang for 2 hours and it felt like we had only been there a few minutes before it was time to leave.  Such a fun night.

video

The opening act was the very talented Naturally 7.  If you haven't heard of them, check them out on YouTube.  They are an American music group who sing a capella style (which they call "vocal play").

*  Miss C graduated from preschool this week!  The children listened to a story about moving on to kindergarten, then sang their graduation song and received their certificates.  She was very proud of herself!

Today is Miss S's last day of school and summer can begin!

Mom's Daily Attitude

“Keep your thoughts positive because your thoughts become your words. Keep your words positive because your words become your behavior. Keep your behavior positive because your behavior becomes your habits. Keep your habits positive because your habits become your values. Keep your values positive because your values become your destiny.”
― Mahatma Gandhi

Here are some ideas to help keep your attitude where you need it each day, so your family can benefit from a calm, patient mom:

Sleep

This is a huge factor for moms.  When we are tired, we are grumpy with our children, even if we start the day with the best of intentions.  Try to aim for 7 - 8 hours of sleep a night.

Exercise

Take time to move each day.  Exercise is an excellent stress buster and a great way to connect and have fun with your children.

Be Affectionate

Hug your children.  Hugs do wonders for our well-being.  Hormones are released during a hug which heal feelings of anger and promote feelings of trust and bonding.  Hugs also lower our blood pressure and help release tension in our bodies.

Listen to Music

Listening to music you enjoy and is uplifting to your spirit causes your brain to release dopamine which makes you feel happy.

Eat Real Food

Have fresh fruit, vegetables and healthy snacks ready to eat so you are feeding your body with good ingredients to help it do its job properly. Real foods have vitamins, minerals and other nutrients which are lacking in prepackaged goods.

What do you do to help with your attitude during the day?

Today

Up early. Remembered dream where I was starring in a film with Tom Cruise. Drink hot tea. Play at the park with Miss C. Wash dishes. Spray homemade air freshener. Strip beds and wash bedding. Reading a favourite blog. Vacuum bedrooms. Eat Greek yogurt with blueberries. Watch Miss C dancing to music. Clean the bathrooms with pink grapefruit cleaner.

Baked salmon over salad for lunch. Clean Marlin's water. The fragrance of orange and lemon drifting through the house. Read stories. Build a Lego tower. Create animals out of playdough.  Walk in the sun to preschool. Chat with a friend. Nigella Lawson's "Kitchen" for inspiration. Bake banana muffins.

Confirm plans for the weekend. Laundry washed. Dinner devoured. Water my vegetable garden. Practice spelling test with Miss S. Tickle fight with the girls. Bedtime cuddles. Hot bath. Victoria magazine.

Good night.

Self-Care: Hot Towel Scrub

Hot Towel Scrub

A hot towel scrub is a wonderful, soothing self-care exercise.  It is great to do first thing in the morning to help wake your body up.  I love to do it before bed to help relax my body for sleep (adding a drop or two of lavender essential oil to the water will help with this).

All you need is a sink full of hot water and a washcloth.

Wet the washcloth in the water and wring out.

Begin to scrub your skin gently until it becomes warm (not too hard, it should feel relaxing).  Work on one section of your body at a time in the following order: fingers and hands, arms, shoulders, neck and face, chest, back, abdomen, legs and feet.

Reheat the towel as needed in the hot water.

Benefits:

  • Energizes your body in the morning or deeply relaxes you in the evening
  • Reduces muscle tension
  • Calms the mind
  • Promotes circulation
  • Activates the lymphatic system

Have you ever tried a hot towel scrub?
