Summer Vacation


It's summer vacation time.  I'm taking 2 weeks off from blogging to enjoy the rest of the summer.  My sister is visiting from England and I want to fully enjoy the time with her.  

I'll see you back here in September.

5 Free (or nearly free) Fun Family Activities

Family Fun Night

Make sure everyone can join in the fun.  If you play board games, young children can roll the dice or move the game pieces.  You can also do a parlour entertainment evening.  Play piano or another instrument, recite poetry or tell a story.   

Local Adventures

Check out your city or town's website to see what free activities are available for families.  Does your local zoo, museum, science centre or other tourist attraction offer free days?  Visit a community sports field and watch a game of soccer or baseball.  Does your town or city have a bowling program where children can bowl for free during the summer?

Build paper airplanes

Look up designs and have everyone make their own (or assist young children).  Then have a competition to see whose plane flies the furthest or does the best stunt.

Volunteer

Spend a day making a positive impact in your community.  Choose an issue together which is important to your family, then find a local organization that works on that issue and volunteer. Volunteering can help you make new friends and shows children how you can make a difference and how good it feels to do that.  

Go swimming

This is a low-cost, fun family activity.  Swimming gives you an all-over body workout and is suitable for any age group.

Laundry
Sweep and mop kitchen floor

Inventory pantry/freezer/fridge
Write grocery list
Grocery shopping
Wash bathroom rugs

The weather outside is:
Sunny with blue skies and a high of 28C.  Gorgeous!   

On the menu this week:
Monday - Hamburgers
Tuesday - Maple salmon with rice and green beans
Wednesday - Tacos
Thursday - Mushroom chicken with rice
Friday - Italian meatloaf with mashed potatoes and broccoli
Saturday - Roast chicken with salad and corn
Sunday - Cheese tortellini with pink sauce and caesar salad


If I have a few minutes to myself, I will:
Read!

New recipe I tried, or want to try this week:
Italian meatloaf.

In the garden:
I have already blanched and frozen peas, broccoli and cauliflower.  Carrots are just about ready.

Homemaking Tip:
If you break a glass on a hard floor, pick up any large pieces carefully. Sweep the area using a dustpan and brush. Take a slice of bread or a disc of playdough and gently press it over the area to remove any small shards of glass.

Self-Care: Exercise

Self-care is important for moms. We manage the demands of maintaining a home and looking after children and often have no time to look after ourselves. You may feel guilty for taking time for yourself. You are allowed to take care of yourself during motherhood. Self-care is beneficial in dealing with stress, will recharge you and contributes to your overall happiness.  

Exercise has lots of benefits which we all know. From boosting metabolism, improving mood, decreasing stress, increasing energy and promoting good sleep.  

Try to do 30 minutes a day. Including the children will teach them the importance of regular exercise. This could be riding your bike with the family at the park, playing tag, swimming, practicing yoga or walking around the neighbourhood.  

If you cannot manage 30 minutes at one time, break it down into three 10 minute sessions during the day.  

If you need motivation, try setting small realistic goals. Check off a workout on a checklist each day or sign up for a 5k race and reward yourself once completed. Treat yourself to a spa treatment (at the salon or at home), buy some new music to put on your iPod, read a book, buy some pretty flowers, take a quiet bath or earn a night off from cooking dinner.

Wash outside light fixtures
Take the girls to the park

Currently reading:

The weather outside is:
Lovely.  Blue skies and sun.  

On the menu this week:
Monday - Maple salmon with rice and broccoli
Tuesday - Hamburgers and salad
Wednesday - Dinner out (day trip)
Thursday - Chicken fajitas
Friday - Leftovers/buffet night
Saturday - Dinner out (day trip)
Sunday - Baked chicken with coleslaw, salad and corn 


If I have a few minutes to myself, I will:
Catch up with a few blogs.

In the garden:
My green beans are growing!  I have to cut my broccoli so we can have that tonight.

Homemaking Tip:
Place a few grains of rice in your salt shaker.  The rice prevents the salt from clumping in the shaker due to humidity.

Fruit Kebabs with Honey Yogurt Dip

Fruit Kebabs with Honey Yogurt Dip


This is a fun way to serve fruit.  Use your family's favourite fruits.    

Strawberries, cut into chunks or slices
Grapes (green or red)
Blueberries
Peaches, cut into chunks
Orange slices or satsumas
Raspberries
Pineapple, cut into chunks
Apples, cut into chunks
Kiwi slices

Thread the fruit onto skewers.  Arrange on a serving plate.

Honey Yogurt Dip

Ingredients:

1 cup plain yogurt
1 tablespoon honey
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Directions:

Combine the yogurt, honey and vanilla extract in a small bowl.  Serve with the fruit skewers.
